Technology Empowers Green Lithium Industry | SDN Environmental Presents Core Technical Solution for Zero-Discharge of Ternary Cathode Washing Wastewater

The new energy lithium battery sector is undergoing rapid technological iteration. As the core substrate for power batteries, ternary cathode material generates washing wastewater during production. Treatment of this wastewater constitutes a critical link for manufacturers to achieve compliant operation, cost reduction, efficiency improvement and low-carbon green development. Ternary cathode washing wastewater is characterized by high salinity, heavy metal content, complex organic compositions and fluctuating water quality. Conventional treatment processes can merely meet basic discharge standards, accompanied by a host of industry pain points including water resource waste, large solid waste output, high operation & maintenance costs and loss of valuable resources. Such approaches fail to satisfy the industry’s current demands for water conservation, emission reduction and resource recycling. To address the complex working conditions of wastewater generated from ternary cathode washing, SDN Environmental has developed an integrated technical solution featuring full-quantification treatment, zero liquid discharge and resource recovery for ternary cathode production lines, drawing on years of experience in lithium battery wastewater governance. Adopting a closed-loop process consisting of staged purification, membrane concentration and crystallization for resource recovery, the solution fundamentally tackles challenges in lithium battery washing wastewater treatment. It helps lithium battery manufacturers accomplish multiple goals including near-zero discharge of wastewater, recycled water reuse and solid waste volume reduction & quality improvement. Key Challenges of Ternary Cathode Washing Wastewater Wastewater produced in the cleaning process of ternary cathode materials features complex working conditions and poses great treatment difficulties, representing a major bottleneck in lithium battery environmental governance: Complex water composition: The wastewater contains heavy metal ions such as nickel, cobalt and manganese. Conventional processes struggle to achieve thorough purification, creating risks of excessive pollutant discharge. Traditional treatment modes mostly adopt "pretreatment + basic biochemical treatment", which only enable compliant effluent discharge. Large volumes of process water are consumed in a single pass, resulting in low water resource utilization and persistently high water costs for enterprises. High-salinity wastewater is difficult to dispose of externally at substantial expense, generating large quantities of solid waste and driving up both environmental operation pressure and overall production costs. Unstable water volume and quality caused by fluctuating production conditions. Ordinary wastewater treatment systems feature weak shock resistance and poor operational stability. Core Technology: Staged Closed-Loop Treatment to Achieve Zero Discharge & Resource Recovery Rejecting extensive conventional wastewater treatment modes, SDN Environmental innovatively applies a full closed-loop process: pretreatment for pollutant decomposition, advanced purification, membrane separation and concentration, plus MVR evaporative crystallization. Through staged treatment and cascaded water reuse, the solution delivers full-volume wastewater recycling, zero liquid discharge and maximum recovery of valuable resources. Targeted Pretreatment to Break Barriers in Wastewater Treatment Aimed at heavy metal complexes, suspended solids and other contaminants in wastewater, processes including chemical complex breaking, coagulation sedimentation and precision filtration are deployed to remove suspended impurities and heavy metals. The technology deconstructs refractory pollutants, stabilizes wastewater quality, lowers the load for downstream advanced treatment, prevents membrane fouling and abrasion, and ensures long-term stable operation of the overall system. Advanced Membrane Purification for Recyclable Standard-Quality Water A multi-stage membrane separation system combining ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis conducts advanced purification on pretreated water, effectively intercepting dissolved salts, trace organics and residual contaminants. The purified water maintains stable high purity and can be directly reused in core processes including ternary cathode cleaning and production batching. Closed circulation of process water drastically cuts the consumption of fresh water. Concentration & Crystallization of High-Salinity Water for Solid Waste Reduction and Zero Discharge For concentrated brine produced by the membrane system, high-efficiency membrane concentration elevates brine concentration, followed by solidification via the MVR evaporative crystallization system. Salts are separated out as crystalline solids to thoroughly separate wastewater and solids. The complete process generates no wastewater discharge, truly realizing zero liquid discharge of process wastewater. Meanwhile, valuable substances can be recovered to maximize the resource value of wastewater.

Sintered Metal Filter Media Selection and Engineering Applications in Flue Gas Treatment for Iron Phosphate and Lithium Iron Phosphate Production

In the production of new energy materials such as iron phosphate and lithium iron phosphate (LFP), flue gas treatment in the two core processes of drying and calcination has long been a major environmental challenge. Unlike ordinary industrial exhaust gases, kiln tail gases in lithium battery production are characterized by four critical features: high corrosivity, high temperature, high viscosity, and high-value dust. These include P₂O₅ crystallization causing pipeline blockages, HF strong acid corrosion, ultra-fine powders easily clogging filter bags, and filter media damage under high-temperature conditions. Traditional glass fiber filter bags and PTFE-coated filter bags frequently suffer from issues such as breakage, dust leakage, surging resistance, frequent replacements, and low recovery rates of valuable powders. These problems not only result in high O&M costs but also easily lead to particulate matter exceeding standards and failure in environmental compliance acceptance. Currently, leading mass-production lines in the lithium battery industry have comprehensively upgraded their core dust removal components to industrial sintered metal filter bags. Targeting the specific working conditions of iron phosphate drying and LFP calcination, metal filter bags can be customized with appropriate materials based on actual parameters such as flue gas temperature, corrosion concentration, and dust characteristics. They have become an essential core equipment in the pretreatment of lithium battery tail gases, thoroughly resolving the shortcomings of traditional filter media. Pain Points in Flue Gas Treatment for Two Major Lithium Battery Processes: 1. Pain Points in Iron Phosphate Drying Tail Gas In the spray drying and flash drying processes of iron phosphate, the flue gas temperature ranges from 100–280°C, with high humidity and moisture content. The gas carries ultra-fine, sticky iron phosphate powder along with trace amounts of ammonia mist and phosphoric acid mist. The drawbacks of traditional filter bags are prominent: moist dust causes bag clogging, cleaning is difficult, operating resistance is high, and frequent shutdowns for bag replacement lead to significant losses in the recovery of valuable powders. 2. Pain Points in LFP Calcination Tail Gas The high-temperature sintering processes in rotary kilns and pusher plate kilns present even harsher conditions: temperatures of 250–600°C, containing corrosive components such as HF, phosphorus oxides, CO, and VOCs. The most fatal issue is that gaseous P₂O₅ easily crystallizes and blocks pipelines upon temperature fluctuations. Fluorides strongly corrode ordinary filter media. Traditional filter bags lack sufficient high-temperature and anti-corrosion resistance, making them highly susceptible to burning, breakage, and dust leakage, which directly affects the stable operation of downstream incineration and washing systems. Technical Advantages of Metal Filter Media in Flue Gas Treatment: Sintered metal filter media are perfectly suited for the high-temperature, highly corrosive, and high-precision dust removal conditions in lithium battery production. They can be flexibly selected based on on-site flue gas temperature, corrosive medium concentration, and dust characteristics. Compared to traditional filter media, they offer significant comprehensive application advantages, effectively solving various pain points in lithium battery tail gas treatment. Advantage 1: Ultra-Wide Temperature Resistance, Unfazed by High-Temperature Calcination Impacts Under working conditions, metal filter bags can continuously withstand temperatures up to 450°C, with instantaneous resistance exceeding 500°C, fully covering the 250–400°C regular operating range of calcination kiln tail gases. For ultra-high-temperature special conditions, upgraded high-grade metal materials can be selected to further increase the temperature limit. This completely eliminates the high-temperature aging, burning, and deformation issues of traditional PTFE and glass fiber filter bags. There is no need to worry about filter bag failure due to kiln temperature fluctuations, ensuring 24-hour continuous and stable system operation, perfectly matching the needs of continuous mass production. Advantage 2: Fluorine and Phosphorus Corrosion Resistance, Tailored for Special Lithium Battery Flue Gases HF and phosphorus compounds in LFP calcination tail gases are the "nemesis" of ordinary organic filter media, causing embrittlement and a drastic drop in air permeability during long-term operation.
